Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant: The Best Face Mask for Softer Skin

The best face mask for brighter, softer, smoother skin: Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant.

Let me just start off by saying this is not your typical review.

If you think you’re going to have to get all the way down to the bottom to determine whether or not I approve of the Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant, sorry to disappoint.

In short, my answer is yes. Yes, I tried the Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant for the first time yesterday which also happened to be my birthday and I approve. Follow along if you’d like to know more and I’ll also share some things I did not like about this peel just to be fair.

Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant

The Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant is new to the market. It hasn’t even been out for a complete month yet but you guys know me and my love for skincare 🙄 I had to try it 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’ve been recently experimenting with the Vitamin C Brightening Serum and figured I should also give this a go.

What Does the Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant Promise to Do

According to Avon, the invigorating warming face peel gently exfoliates your skin while delivering a warming sensation (when activated with water!) to open pores and remove impurities. 3.4 fl. oz.

• Dual exfoliator combines vitamin C flakes + natural seeds to buff skin
• Skin instantly feels softer and looks brighter
• Allergy-tested
• Dermatologist-tested
• Suitable for sensitive skin

Why Vitamin C

Vitamin C is great for decreasing dull tired skin and has also been known to help lighten dark spots. You all know my past with dull skin and of course, I’ve had a few blemishes so for those wondering my skin is not perfect; however, I have noticed major improvements with my skin and I’m proud of where I am.

My current skincare routine:

I am a big fan of simplicity. In the morning, I usually stick with micellar water and moisturizer. Post-workout or to remove makeup, I double cleanse with micellar water and my favorite refining scrub then I follow up with toner and moisturizer.

I exfoliate on Sundays and Wednesdays. This past Sunday, I figured why not go all out and really pamper myself like people weren’t waiting for me to go out and celebrate 🎉

After cleansing with my Anew Refining Daily Scrub, I followed up immediately with the Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant. I still had drops of water on my face from cleansing. According to the directions, water will help activate the peel and you will feel it begin to get warm.

What I Immediately Notice about the Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant:

Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant

The first thing I noticed other than the color of the exfoliant is the smell. I have allergies and citrus either causes me to flare up, have trouble breathing or itchy eyes. This exfoliant caused none of the effects though I could smell a very faint citrus-like (not full on citrus) fragrance. The consistency was a little thick and the texture has some grittiness but it wasn’t too textured where I feared it would be too abrasive. If I had to compare it to something, think of a cornbread batter. It didn’t feel like the typical micro-beds.

How to Apply the Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant:

The rundown: so I’ve had this peel exfoliant for five days and I’ve used it three times already: on the first day – once as directed and the second — well let’s just say you should always read directions before applying skincare products LOL

How I applied it on the first day: cleansed, while face was still damp, applied directly to my face so it immediately gave me a warming sensation. Left on for about a minute, removed and followed my normal routine plus applied makeup.

Got home. Used refining scrub to remove makeup and I noticed my skin was still soft from the morning application! Dried my face and applied the exfoliant (as directed). My face was still very soft.

The third time I used it was that following Wednesday. Please note: you should only use the exfoliant 2-3 times per week. Using it twice in one day was very risky to say the least!

According to the directions: shake tube prior to using. Smooth over face, avoiding eye area, and massage gently for up to two minutes. Rinse well with cool water and experience a warming sensation as formula opens pores. For best results, follow with Anew Vitamin C Brightening Serum.

Immediate Results with the Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant:

I noticed the exfoliant appears to be very opaque when applied to damp skin as opposed to dry skin. I believe this may be due to the fact it was easier to spread. Going back to my first impression, the consistency is a little thick like honey so if it’s diluted with the water droplets left on my face, it made it easier to smooth over and even reapply. Here’s my dry face after the second time I used the exfoliant (same day, two applications):

I am absolutely in love with how soft my skin feels! I don’t think my skin has ever felt this soft!

My Results Using the Vitamin C Peel Exfoliant:

What I didn’t like: In all fairness, I hate that it is called a “peel”. You cannot peel the exfoliant off. It is more like a dry rub that you put on your face and rinse off with water. It takes A LOT of effort to get it off and it can also discolor your sink (temporary).

What I liked:

  1. Effective: my skin felt baby soft after the first application and I noticed an old scar from a post-workout pimple appeared lighter. Word to the wise: don’t pick at blemishes.
  2. Exclusive: one of the few warming face masks on the market that contains Vitamin C
  3. Gentle: you should exfoliate 2-3 times per week; nothing more. I’ve used this peel exfoliant in the morning and then my favorite refining daily scrub at night to remove my makeup and my skin still felt moisturized from the first application. This formula is non-drying.
  4. Fragrance: I have sensitives to citrus and though this has a light citrus smell, it is very faint and not overpowering.
  5. Pocket-friendly: the average Vitamin C Peel for example, Murad Intensive C Radiance Peel, usually runs about $58 at Sephora, Macy’s and ULTA. The Anew Vitamin C Warming Peel is $26 but the intro price is $14.99 plus you can sign up for 10% off here.

My overall score of the Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant: 9.5/10

I give it 9.5/10 and honestly, I may be a little too harsh on the scoring but hey! My opinion 🤷🏽‍♀️ They promised the exfoliant would make your skin feel softer. On the softness scale, I give it 10/10. They said it would also make your skin brighter. I’d also give it a 10/10. On the left side of my face, I have a birthmark. I never really pay that area too much attention. Immediately after I used the exfoliant, I noticed my overall face was brighter but the few blackheads that were near my birthmark were gone and the persistent pimple scar on my right cheek was significantly lighter. This was after the first application, with me using it incorrectly might I add!

Therefore, the product really does live up to it’s promises but I’m still somewhat disappointed in maybe the marketing/naming as well as the fact that it takes some time to remove. I don’t know if different sinks are more susceptible to staining (temporary) but the basement vanity did and the master did not so I guess I’m impartial 🤷🏽‍♀️

Why is it still a must-have? You can clean your sink and “peel” isn’t a make or break. I’m sure you’ve seen videos of girls crying while removing peels so it actually may be a good thing plus my skin has never felt this good. I am a believer.

How I Cleanse My Face Even While in Bed

Have you heard? I have a beauty group now dedicated to giving daily tips, beauty hacks, skin care tips and inspiration! Want to be part of The Beautiful Tribe? Click here to join the Facebook group to connect with other beauty lovers, get helpful advice and share your passion!

If you’re sleeping in your makeup, it’s just like you’re sleeping in the streets. Makeup and even sunscreen can be a magnet to pollution. Think about everything you encounter on a daily basis: car exhaust, smoke, dust, etc. Then, add to the fact, it’s stuck on your face. Once you go to bed, it’s now on your pillow case and mixed with your shedded dead skin cells. It’s like they’re having a little dirty party on your face while you’re asleep unless you use a makeup remover wipe, facial cleanser, cleansing oil or micellar cleansing water. Due to my skin, I opted for makeup remover wipes for sensitive skin. I breakout easily and love makeup.

Yes, we’ve all done it before and maybe haven’t experienced many issues; BUT, over time, we’re doing more damage than good. Now that I know, I sleep with two things on my nightstand. Yes, I’ve had those long nights before but I vowed to never sleep in makeup again. The two things that I always have in arm’s reach: micellar cleansing water and moisturizer or makeup remover wipes and moisturizer.

Literally, most days when I’m feeling exhausted, drained or simply partied too much, I’m cleansing my face while undressing. Sometimes, I flop in the bed and then remove my makeup but I guarantee my makeup is removed before zzzzs. Then I apply my moisturizer. Removing dead skin, bacteria and dirt help to give you a nice natural glow.

Of course, I never had a strict regimen. Occasionally, I’d pick up some wipes or some makeup removing product from the drugstore. Usually this would happen if it was near checkout or during one of my beauty binges. I never formed a habit because I felt like I was just spending money to spend money. Nothing really worked or if it did, it didn’t last.

Some things just dried out too fast. I figured I’d save my money and just wash my face at night. Well, we all know how that goes. Zzzzs…

Until I found these makeup remover wipes.

Best Makeup Remover Wipes for Sensitive Skin

I decided that it really wasn’t worth it any more. I’d always have a pimple or two within two days of sleeping in my makeup. By now, we should all know sleeping in makeup is bad for your skin. Even if you don’t have an immediate break out, it risks bacteria being trapped in your pores. It prevents your skin from “breathing” overnight and it can also cause your skin to age prematurely which leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Oh, there’s also the bacteria that either irritates your skin or possibly even causes an eye infection. Of course, these are just the possibilities.

Some people are able to get away with it (at least for now) but why risk it? Especially when you have tools now that let’s you cleanse your face while you’re still in bed. This is why I had to try out what I’m calling the best makeup remover wipes for sensitive skin.

Check out my review here:

Yes, I’m actually going to show you how it removes my makeup.

My initial expectations:

Honestly, I used several makeup remover wipes before including the most popular ones. My issues were some wipes dried out almost as soon as I opened them. Or some wipes literally burned once I went over my eye area. There was one time I blinked so hard, I thought my eyes would burn out of my skull!

My experience with these wipes:

When receiving these, I didn’t think they’d burn but I did believe they’d dry out fast. As you see in the video, one pack lasted over six weeks and they never dried out! In my opinion, that was the best part. I’ve gone through way too many wipes that dried out. I used to actually wet them with water. Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?

The moisture in the wipe made it so easy to wipe off my entire face. I was wearing everything except eyeshadow. Since then, of course, I’ve used it to remove eyeshadow. I’m so surprised that even after wiping off my entire face, it’s still moist! And get this, I only have to use one wipe!

With that being said, I recommend having these on hand even if you aren’t wearing makeup. I recently broke out because I was working out and not cleansing my face immediately afterwards. I got into the habit of carrying micellar water but wipes may be more convenient for others, especially if you’re traveling. It’s a definite must-have.

My First Ever Gold Peel Off Mask!

Have you heard? I have a beauty group now dedicated to giving daily tips, beauty hacks, skin care tips and inspiration! Want to be part of The Beautiful Tribe? Click here to join the Facebook group to connect with other beauty lovers, get helpful advice and share your passion!

My experience with the new gold peel-off mask:

Let me begin by saying I’ve never used a facial peel or mask before. After looking at those tragedies with the black masks and people almost taking their faces off, I decided against it 😂😂😂

I’d happily use my current skin care products that have changed my skin completely! Before, my skin was dull and lacked character. It was just like “blah.” Now, it’s brighter and my blemishes are almost all gone. How could I be any happier?

Then, Avon announced the new Anew Ultimate Gold Peel-Off Mask. To be fair, Avon does offer other masks. I actually have the Beauty Boost Face Masks Set that I’ve been putting off trying for the last couple of months. Yet, when I saw the new gold peel-off mask, I had to try it! It’s GOLD! The gold screamed my name.

I placed my order on Monday and it arrived Thursday.

Product Description:

Look radiant after using the luxurious gold mask. Infused with a youth-boosting complex of vitamin B3 and botanical extracts, the peel-off mask helps skin look smoother, brighter and more luminous than ever.

Benefits of the Anew Ultimate Gold Peel-Off Mask:

• Makes the appearance of skin look lifted and tightened
• Leaves skin feeling hydrated
• Reduces the appearance of age spots
• Enhances skin clarity
• Visibly improves skin imperfections

How to Use the Anew Ultimate Gold Peel-Off Mask:

Apply a thin, even layer on cleansed skin. Leave on until dry. Gently peel off. Rinse with warm water. Use 1-2 times a week.

How Did I Use the Mask:

  1. Cleansed face with Refining Daily Scrub ( I was a little nervous about this as I didn’t want to remove too much of my natural oils or irritate my skin)
  2. Used paper towel to remove excess water from face
  3. Poured the mask in my hand
  4. Applied the mask directly to my face with fingers
  5. Waited 3-5 minutes to peel off
  6. Went over face with retexturizing peel. It’s been a while since I’ve used these but figured it would help remove the slight residue from the mask
  7. Applied moisturizer

Note: the instructions on the mask call for you to rinse with water. This is very possible because my face did not feel weighed down or sticky. It just had the residue of film in some areas where I peeled it off but still felt clean. Kinda looked like when you use Elmer’s glue on your hands. Don’t ask how I know that lol

What is the consistency of the mask:

The mask feels like honey. Think of the thickness without the stickiness. I felt as though I had better control over applying it a little heavier even though the instructions say use a thin layer. That could also be because it dried fairly quickly. Most masks dry in about 10-20 minutes.

My initial review:

At this time, I feel as though it’s too early to do a full review as I’ve only used it once. Some of the benefits that it promises usually take time to show. We’ll revisit in a month or so of continued use.

I’ll begin by saying I’m very happy and surprised that my skin isn’t irritated by the scrub, mask and retexturing peels. I can’t believe I used them all in one day 🤦🏽‍♀️. Moving forward, I’ll use my micellar cleansing water first or a gel cleanser so it’s more gentle on my face. Just a precaution.

Once I applied the mask, I was nervous. Moment of honesty here, I have facial hair that I haven’t removed it. I knew the mask would be gentle and I wouldn’t need to yank my face off BUT I thought about the hair. Think of when you’re ripping a band-aid off your arm. Ouch!

To my surprise, it didn’t hurt at all. I didn’t see any hair in the mask either lol

Initially, I felt the tightening of the mask and my skin felt hydrated. It’s about 2.5 hours after the peel and my skin still feels the same. I have combo/oily skin and the oil has yet to show it’s ugly little head; though, this may be my moisturizer working.

One thing is for sure: I know this is bad but I can’t stop touching my face. It feels softer and smoother.

My little plunder:

I accidentally placed the mask on some of my bottom lashes on both eyes 🤦🏽‍♀️ . Sounds crazy but I actually decided to keep it there versus immediately rubbing it. I didn’t want to smear it, make it spread and get into my eye. Also, I didn’t want to rub off the peel that was already drying on my cheek.

I peeled it all off at once and it didn’t even hurt when I removed it from my lashes. (Don’t try that at home.)

Final Verdict:

I recommend this to anyone who loves skin care and masks. It’s a definite must try; though I believe some of the benefits take time, I do love how soft, smooth and fresh my face looks and feels. To receive notification of when it’s available, click here.

EDIT (after second application):

You’ve read my initial review and since then, I’ve used it a second time — on April 15, 2018. A little over a week after the first time.

Here’s how I used it:
  1. Cleaned face with Anew Clean Micellar Cleansing Water
  2. Let face dry completely
  3. Applied Anew Ultimate Gold Peel-off Mask directly to face with hands
  4. Peeled off mask after 20 minutes
  5. Cleaned face with a damp papertowel
  6. Applied nutraeffects Balance Night cream (moisturizer)

My observation: I noticed when applying to a dry face, it was easier for me to apply it. It still felt as though I was applying a thick cream or honey but it didn’t take much effort to easily spread the mask.

I left the mask on longer this time. I felt like I put too much on my forehead so it took longer to dry. The longer the mask stayed on, the tighter my face felt. Who would’ve thought, right?

Once I removed the mask, my skin still felt tight. I couldn’t really do too much assessment as we were rushing out to see Rampage — I actually like the movie.

When we made it inside the movie theater, my mother-in-law couldn’t figure out what changed. She looked at me, kept smiling, studied my face and then said I was glowing. She was really trying to figure out what I’d done differently. She even asked if I had makeup on — I was completely bare face!

I honestly have to give the glowing face credit to the Anew Ultimate Gold Peel-Off Mask. Why? My mother-in-law has been seeing me at least 2-3 times per week without any makeup. She knows what my face looks like. Though I didn’t really have time to study my face, she noticed it instantly. It was the first thing she said!

Verdict: I will continue to use the mask. Though the instructions say up to twice per week. I intend to use every Sunday.

My Personal Story Skin Care Woes and Battle with Dull Skin:

People wonder why I talk about skin care so much, my skin was beyond dull. I had a few things going on; dull, oily in some areas, acne prone and sensitive. I cleaned my face so I thought there was nothing else that could be done. I’d cover the blemishes with makeup.

Then I came to a very important realization:

Yes, I absolutely love makeup but the main purpose (for us everyday girls) is not to hide 🙈who we are — it’s to enhance certain features.👀👃💄

About five years ago, I would have never applied ANY makeup product without applying foundation. If I wore lipstick, I’d apply foundation. Makeup was perfect so I didn’t want to mess it up even more by showing my flaws!

At that time, my foundation would be bumpy, could barely see the coverage and wouldn’t last. Crazy but it was a fairly expensive makeup brand that I was using then. Yet, you couldn’t even tell I was wearing foundation. Just look at the photo.

My skin looked dull🌚:

I had two rough gray patches on both sides of my face from an allergic reaction to my cell phone. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Multiple acne scars in the center of my cheeks.

Pimples in the center of my forehead.

I was completely self conscious.

It didn’t help when I went to visit my grandmother and she called my skin dirty. Honest, southern folks. Glad that’s over.

What changed:

I decided to really focus on my skin back in 2016.

Made the decision to purchase a scrub that you can use daily.

Almost instantly, people began to tell me how bright my skin looked.

Looking back, I can’t believe I would have ever done this — being so comfortable that I sit here comfortably without any foundation.

This look: brows, mascara, lipstick and a little highlight on the nose.

Foundation free😊

Now: Loving the skin I’m in.

Dull Skin
Before: Yes, I’m wearing foundation

Flawless Skin: Healthy Glowing Skin
After: I skipped foundation😱

My current skincare regimen:

Quite honestly, I’m a minimalist. The most important step to my skin was to exfoliate. Exfoliating does the process of removing dead skin cells.

Why is exfoliating important:

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells which not only helps to clear up your complexion but it also makes it easier for the skin to absorb those good vitamins and ingredients in your moisturizer. That was the biggest difference

With the scrub, it’s like a microexfoliant so it’s gentle enough for every day use and effective.

What steps do I follow:

1) Refining Daily Scrub

2) Revitalizing Toner

3) Day Cream (Balance moisturizer for oily/combo skin)

On most days now, I skip steps 1-2 and use the Anew Clean Micellar Cleansing Water. It cleansing but also has toning abilities so I go straight to step three. It’s actually what I use when leaving the gym to prevent new breakouts.

I exfoliate once a week (during colder temperatures) and twice during the summer with the Pore Penetrating Invigorating Scrub.

I either substitute the refining scrub for the pore penetrating invigorating scrub or micellar water. I ALWAYS moisturize. The Balance day/night cream helps to balance your pH levels which then, controls excessive oil or dryness.

Since focusing on my skin, my makeup looks flawless!

What does non-comedogenic mean for you and your acne?

Experiencing acne and want to know what products are less likely to irritate your skin? Are you selecting products that are non-comedogenic?

Need help with picking the right skin care products for your skin or do you love learning about new skin care products? Join my free Facebook Group: Skin Care ✔️

What does non-comedogenic mean for you and your acne?

Acne, for many people, is like the Wicked Witch of the West! There’s nothing worse than planning for your special day and dreading taking photos because of breakouts!

It’s commonly thought that acne only occurs with teenagers.

Acne can occur in any stage of a person’s life! Don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed if you are an adult experiencing acne.

What causes acne?

Human skin has pores. The pores connect to oil glands under the skin. Follicles, small sacs that produce/secrete liquid, connect the glands to the pores.

The oily liquid produced is called sebum. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the skin’s surface. The small hair grows through the follicle.

When the follicle gets blocked, oil builds up. Skin cells, sebum, hair and bacteria gets backed up or goes back down into the pore. When they start to break down, it becomes infected. The infection then produces pimples, spots, zits, whiteheads, blackheads, cysts and nodules.

It can be painful for some or emotionally disturbing for others.

Risk factors:

Oily/greasy cosmetics
Hormonal changes

How to prevent or treat acne?

  • Be sure to wash your face twice daily (morning and evening)
  • Do not sleep in makeup
  • Keep hair clean
  • Avoid hair on your face (especially if hair is oily or has product in it)
  • Try using an earpiece (dead skin/bacteria can be on the phone)
  • Do not scrub the skin or pop the pimple
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Wash hands frequently, especially before touching your face and/or applying products
  • Pick products marked for sensitive skin to avoid further irritation
  • Look for products marked “non-comedogenic”

What does non-comedogenic mean?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a “comedo” is an acne-lesion, which is a hard blockage created from the excess sebum in the pore (described above). Products that are not labeled as non-comedogenic usually mean there is a chance they have properties that can clog pores — thus having a higher chance of causing acne.

Though non-comedogenic skincare products may not solve or prevent 100% of acne cases, they may help as they do not promote pore-clogging and acne production. It is very important to look for products that do not contain unnecessary oil (even good oil) and those that do not promote more oil production.

Some comedogenic ingredients to avoid:

Let’s start by saying everyone’s skin is different; what may be perfectly fine, may irritate someone else’s skin. Here are some products/ingredients that are more likely to clog pores:

  • Isopropyl Myristate
  • Coal Tar
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Shea Butter
  • Almond Oil
  • Algae Extract
  • Pigments & Dyes (especially Red)
  • Acetylated Lanolin
  • Benzaldehyde
  • Isopropyl Palmitate
  • Ethyhexly Palmitate
  • Stearic Acid
  • Sodium Chloride

How to Pick Non-Comedogenic Products to Help Treat or Prevent Acne

It’s always good to stick to non-comedogenic products if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin. To treat acne, look for descriptions such as “lightweight”, “non-greasy”, “oil-free”, “sensitive skin” or “acne-prone.”

Cleanser: Daily cleanser should have pore-clearing and deep-cleaning ingredients such as glycolic acid which have been known to control acne.

Moisturizer:  The product should be thin in consistency and quickly absorb into the skin. It should NOT feel as though you have another layer of skin. Look for products that also have soothing ingredients such as vitamin E, glycerin and hyaluronic acid.

Foundation: Look for foundation marked oil-free and/or non-comedogenic. Make sure the foundation is not too heavy as it will sit on the face and trap the current acne in.

Makeup Tip: Do not skip moisturizer! The powder from your makeup will help absorb excess oil. Without the moisturizer, the final look may look chalky on the pimples and make them appear more!

Alternative Method of Cleaning: Oil Cleansing Method

The theory behind oil cleansing is that like attracts like meaning the new oil will pick up the oil already in your skin to help dissolve it. Oil Cleansing has worked for many who struggle with acne; however, some others have stated it’s made their acne worse. There may be a “purge” where the acne appears worse before it gets better. The way the skin responds is dependent upon each individual. Things to consider: skin type, individual concerns, picking the right oil/combo for skin, or thoroughly removing oil.

Complete List of Comedogenic Oils.

Personal recommendations:

For regular blemishes, I suggest this Blemish system.

For more severe or persistent acne, I suggest this Professional system.

If you have more severe acne, be sure to check with a dermatologist as you may need a medicated solution!

Benefits of Vitamin C:

Do you have a dark spot you want to lighten? Yes, you can still reach for the concealer for TEMPORARY results but also get our Vitamin C Brightening Serum so you won’t have to use so much concealer next time.

Here’s a real photo featuring one of my clients (in FB group):

She’s been battling acne since she had her first daughter. Now that she has a second, her acne has really flared up! She tried witch hazel and apple cider vinegar. Both solutions dried her skin out so bad that they actually made her acne worse no matter how much she diluted them!

She reached out to me frustrated as she had lost confidence. She didn’t even like taking pictures anymore! We were able to recommend a system for her sensitive skin. In addition to our acne treatment, to prevent new acne, we also suggested that she use our Vitamin C Brightening Serum to speed up the process. Within a few short months, her skin is flawless!

Our Vitamin C Brightening Serum is a patented formula that contains a high concentration of 10% pure Vitamin C, which protects skin from sun, pollution and other aggressors.

How to Keep Your Skin Moisturized in the Winter

Do you have dry skin or live in cold climate? Check out these quick tips to keep your skin moisturized and healthy!

Need help with picking the right skin care products for your skin or do you love learning about new skin care products? Join my free Facebook Group!

With the First Day of Winter right around the corner — Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 10:28 AM CDST to be exact, I’ve noticed the weather has already cooled down here in Chicago.

With the blistering temps, wind and snow (yes already!), the cold has a nasty little way of sucking up almost every ounce of moisture and making you look and feel drier than the Sahara Desert.

Seasonal acne is also more common during this time due to the colder temperatures — the drier your skin, the more it tells your body to produce more oil — making it easier for bacteria to breed. If you notice more pimples than usual, it’s not your fault — blame it on the cold; however, finding the proper moisturizing products can help 🙂

A common mistake that we all make, at some point, is skipping our skincare routine because we are not outside as much as we were during those beautiful summer months.

Fact: the sun is still out in the winter. Earth is actually closer to the sun in January and farther away in July! So yes, you still NEED sunscreen to prevent further damage.

Though I don’t experience breakouts often, I have noticed that my oily skin has switched to normal/dry in the past few weeks. There is a difference between skin type and skin condition. You are born with a certain skin type but environmental factors such as the weather can affect it — meaning the condition of your skin is subject to change BUT this does not change your overall skin type. The condition of your skin can change numerous times so don’t feel bad if you’re switching out some of your staple products. With that being said, I’m actually switching out my oily skincare products for some more moisturizing winter-proof items.

Let’s talk about it, babes!

Tips to keep your skin moisturized during the winter:

Gentle Cleanser

As you all know, I am in love with my daily scrub. It makes my skin look and feel so good. My skin looks so CLEAR. No dirt. No ash. It was like my skin was “alive.” It gave me that nice squeaky-clean feeling but in the wintertime, I noticed my skin felt a little dry — it was so “tight” after I rinsed off. Last year, I refused to give it up because I was so happy with my results. I did NOT want to go back to looking like one of the actors from the Walking Dead :/ Instead of suffering with dry skin, I made sure to include a toner to help restore my natural pH balance.

I recently discovered another facial cleanser that has similar properties and promises. It was a cream that promised to cleanse the skin of dirt, oil and impurities, help reinforce skin’s protective moisture barrier to keep skin feeling resilient and prep skin for moisturizer. It said it would improve skin tone and texture and it was suited for normal/dry skin which is perfect for me!

Interesting thought: this cleanser does not “foam”; however, cleansers that foam/lather have an alkaline pH. Our skin has an acidic pH. The alkalinity can strip away your skin’s acid mantle which prevents it from retaining moisture — thus making it more susceptible to drying out.

Soap-free and non-lathering cleansers usually have a neutral pH which doesn’t disrupt the skin’s acidity level and is less drying.

The Anew Clean Comforting Cream Cleanser & Mask is a cream that doesn’t have much lather but makes your skin feel softer and moisturized when applied. I don’t feel as though I’m striping my skin of it’s natural oils but I still feel clean.

While waiting on my new cleanser, I used my micellar water instead of my scrub daily as it was more gentle and toned my skin at the same time.

Now this step is NOT optional! Exfoliation is key. It helps to remove dead skin cells which in turn, makes it easier for your skin to absorb the treatments and moisturizers you use later. I suggest gently exfoliating and not as often as you would in summer months. If you exfoliate three times a week, try twice. If you exfoliate twice, try once a week. Of course, everyone’s skin is unique so listen to your skin and make adjustments.

For this step, I didn’t need to get any additional items. I already had my refining daily scrub and Anew Clinical Extra Strength Retexturizing Peel pads.

You can either use a physical exfoliant which has a grainy texture (think scrubs) or use chemical exfoliant such as AHA or BHA. Personally, I found the chemical exfoliant to be less drying. You use it AFTER you cleanse your face and it’s usually packed with other vitamins and nutrients to help maintain moisture.

With that being said, to help lighten a few of my acne scars and gently exfoliate, I chose to use the pads once per week.

The Retexturizing Peel pads state they’ll reveal fresher, smoother, more radiant looking skin, improve texture and radiance, minimize the appearance of sun spots/fine lines/post-acne marks and also contains alpha hydroxy acid (AHA).

Honestly, I just loved how moisturized my skin felt afterwards but I did notice my skin looked more vibrant.

Now this step seems VERY optional for a few people; however, I have personally come to know and love my toner. First, let me just dispel the rumors that toner is ONLY for oily people. Lately, many toners have been created without drying alcohols; therefore, ANYONE can use them — yes, even you with the dry skin.

The primary function of toner is to help restore the skin back to its native pH level which is great if you use a lot of drying cleansers. It also helps to remove dirt, makeup, oil or dead skin cells that the cleanser missed.

There are many toners on the market. I’d personally recommend a toner that is actually moisturizing which leads me to the photo below. I personally LOVE this toner! It makes my skin feel clean and moisturized.

Pro tip: moisturizers and serums are easily absorbed on damp skin in the winter. Try to apply them right after your toner.

Let me be the first to say that I am NOT a serum or even treatment type of girl. I like to keep my skincare regimens simple BUT my skin seems to disagree with me especially lately. So no more cleanser and out the door!

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t skeptical to try a new serum. It’s just something about the word “serum” that makes me think that it’s going to be heavy and uncomfortable. I like the lightweight and “airy” feeling.

Yet, they say try a hydrating serum to help boost and seal in moisture. Now the added benefit to this serum is that it has anti-aging properties. Reluctantly, I tried this serum but I was pleasantly surprised by how light it feels and how easily I could use my moisturizers on top!

As stated previously, the sun is still out in the winter and could potentially be more dangerous than it is in summer months; therefore, it should not come as a surprise when I mention getting an AM moisturizer that has a higher SPF.

This moisturizer is perfect for sensitive skin as it is fragrance- and oil-free. It promises to help heal environmental damage while also offering up to 24 hours of moisture!

Overnight Cream

If you’ve ever spoken to a skincare fanatic, you’ve probably heard us say “day cream/lotion helps protect the skin while night creams help repair the skin.” Yes, day creams can also help repair; however, the body’s strongest healing properties are when it’s at rest.

Just like the day lotion mentioned above, the deep recovery cream is fragrance- and oil-free. It is suitable for sensitive skin and also has anti- aging properties! This is suitable for daily use after cleansing at night.

It also has anti-aging properties so it will help with fine and dry lines as well as overall dryness. It is fragrance-, paraben- and oil-free so great for those with sensitive skin.

If your skin is incredibly dry, you can actually use this on top of your night cream.

How To Prevent Breakouts After Exercising

Pimples, zits, blemishes, breakouts, acne — whatever you want to call them, we all hate them.

Up until just recently, I literally forgot what it felt like to have them. Since I’ve changed my skincare routine, I’ve had no more than one pimple and it just so happens to occur around that “time” *sigh*

Lately, I’ve been living life like it’s golden — like no pimple monster could touch me. That was until last week when I found myself not having one pimple, but four!!! There were two pimples under each eye.

I didn’t want to leave the house!

I felt like everyone would judge me for my pimples. Hey! It happens! Have you ever heard the name Pepperoni Face? Pizza Face? Crater face? Commander Spot? Looking at people shake their heads because they know you’re too old to have a pimple?

So what happened?!?!?

What changed in my daily routine that could have possibly caused the breakouts?

Here’s the first day of working out:

Here’s the very next day (do you see the pimples forming on the left side):

What exactly happened:

  1. We have an incentive and I’m going to Jamaica.
  2. We decided to get a puppy.
  3. We purchased an exercise bike for the house.
  4. Lazy mindset.

Now add it all up and it spells disaster. I’m trying to get Bermuda-ready so I promised to exercise each day. The puppy is too young for strenuous activity so I exercise him separately and then I work out.

My days looked a little like this:

  1. Walk/jog/sprint with puppy for 20-25 minutes
  2. Hop on exercise bike
  3. Take puppy out for potty break

  1. Walk/jog/sprint with puppy for 20-25 minutes
  2. Head to the gym
  3. Stop at PetCo or grocery store since they’re all in the same vicinity

Throw an occasional monkey wrench in there so I’d never get right back to cleanse my face.

End result: it would be at least one hour after sweating before I’d wash my face.

I know!

I figured as long as I washed my face it would be ok, right? Wrong!

Most acne forms by dead skin cells, bacteria and oil clogging your pores. People who exercise frequently generally produce more dead skin cells than those who do not. Be sure to exfoliate at least twice per week if you exercise frequently to remove the excess dead skin cells.

When you exercise, your pores are expanding or opening which is actually a good thing. It helps the blood and oxygen circulate throughout your skin. Your sweat helps regulate your body temperature and keeps it cooler; exercising helps cleanse the body from the inside and has been said to prevent some signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging skin. In other words, don’t stop exercising! It’s very beneficial.

Your body is pushing the dead skin cells and toxins out to help keep you beautiful. If you leave them on the surface, they’ll find a way back in — getting caught in your pores; thus, creating acne.

The best way to prevent it is by cleansing your face before and after exercising.

Cleansing before you exercise will help remove any leftover makeup, oils and bacteria from the previous day or accumulated since the last time you cleansed your face. Remember, your pores will open when exercising. You don’t want to let in old dirt 🙂

And of course, you want to cleanse after to get those new impurities off your skin and out of your system.

I’m not a fan of taking a shower at the gym. To each, her own. It’s just not my thing.

What can you do if you don’t like to use the shower or in a hurry?

First things first, take a towel to pat the excess sweat off. It may help some to clear your pores but you still want to cleanse your face.

This is all about personal preference but I suggest putting one of these three items in your gym bag or purse:

  1. Gentle Cleanser – take your daily cleanser with you. Try the Anew Clean Illuminating Rich Cleansing Foam which is oil-free and suitable for Normal/Combination skin. It’s gentle enough to be used twice daily and won’t strip your natural oils. The goal is to get rid of excess oil, not ALL oil as the oil helps the skin maintain it’s youthful, radiant look.
  2. Facial Cleansing Wipes – some gyms have low water pressure and it seems almost impossible to wash away all of your cleanser or sometimes, you’re just really in a rush to leave. With wipes, you can literally wipe your face off while you’re heading to the car! Try the Makeup Remover Wipes with Mineral Complex. They’re gentle enough to be used around your eye area.
  3. Micellar Cleansing Water – usually does not require water. Simply pour some on a towel, wipe your face and go. Micelles are attracted to dirt and oil so it helps draw them out and clean your face. They’re suspended in soft water so it will also help maintain your skin’s moisture. Try Anew Clean Micellar Cleansing Water, not only does it cleanse but also tones.

What did I use to get rid of the four pimples in less than 4 days?

I believe any of the solutions above could help prevent acne; however, I personally prefer the micellar cleansing water. It’s suitable for all skin types and not only does it cleanse but it also tones which is great for people with oily skin. It eliminates the step of having to use a separate toner and I feel I could literally just apply my moisturizer after using it.

I like that I can control how much comes out. As I said before, we have a puppy. He loves licking our faces. I’ve seen the things that go into his mouth and quite frankly, I don’t want them on my face. After he’s done trying to lick the skin off my face, I just throw a little micellar water on a napkin and wipe the area. They say it’s gentle enough to be used twice daily but so far, I’ve been using it anywhere from 3-5 times and haven’t had any issues. I have very sensitive skin so it’s a definite plus for me!

How do I prevent acne and pimples now?

As soon as I finish working out, I cleanse my face in the car, the kitchen, or wherever I am! Because of this micellar water, I really have no excuse. It’s small enough for my purse (I like totes) but I could always just put in travel container if need be.

Does Micellar Water Really Work?

Like many people, I see a lot of beauty tips and gurus and think it’s a bunch of hype so before I share this photo, I actually want to give you a little of what happened.

So yesterday, I worked out, followed my skin care routine and then we went out for breakfast.👸🏽

We came back home and that was it.

I didn’t apply any makeup. No foundation. No primer. No mascara. No highlight. 🙅🏽‍♀️

I didn’t go running up the stairs. Didn’t take a walk.🙅🏽‍♀️

Absolutely no sweating.🙅🏽‍♀️

Right before bed, I used my Micellar Water to cleanse my face.

Left: clean
Right: embarrassed to say but mine 😳

Each day, you’re exposing your skin to environmental factors such as pollution, debris, exhaust from gas, old oil/bacteria from clothing and pillows. Think: this all soaks into your skin while sleeping 😨

Omg y’all! So disgusting.
