How to Keep Your Skin Moisturized in the Winter + Give-a-way!!!

How to Keep Your Skin Moisturized in the Winter + Give-a-way!!!

With the First Day of Winter right around the corner — Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 10:28 AM CDST to be exact, I’ve noticed the weather has already cooled down here in Chicago.

With the blistering temps, wind and snow (yes already!), the cold has a nasty little way of sucking up almost every ounce of moisture and making you look and feel drier than the Sahara Desert.

Seasonal acne is also more common during this time due to the colder temperatures — the drier your skin, the more it tells your body to produce more oil — making it easier for bacteria to breed. If you notice more pimples than usual, it’s not your fault — blame it on the cold; however, finding the proper moisturizing products can help 🙂

A common mistake that we all make, at some point, is skipping our skincare routine because we are not outside as much as we were during those beautiful summer months.

Fact: the sun is still out in the winter. Earth is actually closer to the sun in January and farther away in July! So yes, you still NEED sunscreen to prevent further damage.

Though I don’t experience breakouts often, I have noticed that my oily skin has switched to normal/dry in the past few weeks. With that being said, I’m actually switching out my oily skincare products for some more moisturizing winter-proof items.

Let’s talk about it, babes!

Tips to keep your skin moisturized during the winter:

  1. Gentle CleanserAs you all know, I am in love with my daily scrub. It made my skin look and feel so good. My skin looks so CLEAR. No dirt. No ash. It was like my skin was “alive.” It gave me that nice squeaky-clean feeling but in the wintertime, I noticed my skin felt a little dry — it was “tight” after I rinsed off. Last year, I refused to give it up because I was so happy with my results. I did NOT want to go back to looking like one of the actors from the Walking Dead :/

I recently discovered another facial cleanser that had similar properties and promises. It was a cream that promised to cleanse the skin of dirt, oil and impurities, help reinforce skin’s protective moisture barrier to keep skin feeling resilient and prep skin for moisturizer. It said it would improve skin tone and texture and it was suited for normal/dry skin which is perfect for me!

Interesting thought: this cleanser does not “foam”; however, cleansers that foam/lather have an alkaline pH. Our skin has an acidic pH. The alkalinity can strip away your skin’s acid mantle which prevents it from retaining moisture — thus making it more susceptible to drying out.

Soap-free and non-lathering cleansers usually have a neutral pH which doesn’t disrupt the skin’s acidity level and is less drying.

The Anew Clean Comforting Cream Cleanser & Mask is a cream that doesn’t have much lather but makes your skin feel softer and moisturized when applied. I don’t feel as though I’m striping my skin of it’s natural oils but I still feel clean.

Anew Clean Comforting Cream Cleanser & Mask

While waiting on my new cleanser, I used my micellar water instead of my scrub as it was more gentle and toned my skin at the same time.

  2. Exfoliate

Now this step is completely optional! Exfoliation for me is key. It helps to remove dead skin cells which in turn, makes it easier for your skin to absorb the treatments and moisturizers you use later. I suggest gently exfoliating and not as often as you would in summer months. If you exfoliate three times a week, try twice. If you exfoliate twice, try once a week. Of course, everyone’s skin is unique so listen to your skin and make adjustments.

For this step, I didn’t need to get any additional items. I already had my refining daily scrub and Anew Clinical Extra Strength Retexturizing Peel pads. The scrub gently exfoliates; however, it’s the cleansing factor that makes my skin feel drier. The peel pads are after cleansing so my skin doesn’t feel “stripped” after the cleansing agents. The Retexturizing Peel pads state they’ll reveal fresher, smoother, more radiant looking skin, improve texture and radiance, minimize the appearance of sun spots/fine lines/post-acne marks and also contains alpha hydroxy acid (AHA).Anew Clinical Extra Retexturizing Peel

  3. TonerNow this step may be VERY optional for a few people; however, I have personally come to know and love my toner. First, let me just dispel the rumors that toner is ONLY for oily people. Lately, many toners have been created without drying alcohols; therefore, ANYONE can use them — yes, even you with the dry skin. The primary function of toner is to help restore the skin back to its native pH level which is great if you use a lot of drying cleansers. It also helps to remove dirt, makeup, oil or dead skin cells that the cleanser missed.

There are many toners on the market. I’d personally recommend a toner that is actually moisturizing which leads me to the photo below. I personally LOVE this toner! It makes my skin feel clean and moisturized.

Pro tip: moisturizers and serums are easily absorb on damp skin in the winter. Try to either them right after your toner.

  4. Treatment

Let me be the first to say that I am NOT a serum or even treatment type of girl. I like to keep my skincare regimens simple BUT my skin seems to disagree with me especially lately. So no more cleanser and out the door!I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t skeptical to try a new serum. It’s just something about the word “serum” that makes me think that it’s going to be heavy and uncomfortable. I like the lightweight and “airy” feeling.Yet, they say try a hydrating serum to help boost and seal in moisture. Now the added benefit to this serum is that it has anti-aging properties. Reluctantly, I tried this serum but I was pleasantly surprised by how light it feels and how easily I could use my moisturizers on top!

  5. Moisturizer

As stated previously, the sun is still out in the winter and could potentially be more dangerous than it is in summer months; therefore, it should not come as a surprise when I mention getting an AM moisturizer that has a higher SPF.This moisturizer is perfect for sensitive skin as it is fragrance- and oil-free. It promises to help heal environmental damage while also offering up to 24 hours of moisture!

  6. Overnight Cream

If you’ve ever spoken to a skincare fanatic, you’ve probably heard us say “day cream/lotion helps protect the skin while night creams help repair the skin.” Yes, day creams can also help repair; however, the body’s strongest healing properties are when it’s at rest.Just like the day lotion mentioned above, the deep recovery cream is fragrance- and oil-free. It is suitable for sensitive skin and also has anti- aging properties! This is suitable for daily use after cleansing at night.

  7. Overnight Mask

Just like the overnight cream mentioned above, night creams are great for dry skin! With this Overnight Hydration Mask, you actually don’t need to use it as often. This hydration masks says that it will boost the skin’s moisture up to 3x instantly and hydrate the skin for up to 48 hours! It also has anti-aging properties so it will help with fine and dry lines as well as overall dryness. It is fragrance-, paraben- and oil-free so great for those with sensitive skin.

If your skin is incredibly dry, you can actually use this on top of  your night cream.

Bonus tip: for overall moisture, as soon as you exit the shower, apply your body cream to damp skin to help seal in moisture.

How To Prevent Breakouts After Exercising

How To Prevent Breakouts After Exercising

Pimples, zits, blemishes, breakouts, acne — whatever you want to call them, we all hate them.

Up until just recently, I literally forgot what it felt like to have them. Since I’ve changed my skincare routine, I’ve had no more than one pimple and it just so happens to occur around that “time” *sigh*

Lately, I’ve been living life like it’s golden — like no pimple monster could touch me. That was until last week when I found myself not having one pimple, but four!!! There were two pimples under each eye.

I didn’t want to leave the house!

I felt like everyone would judge me for my pimples. Hey! It happens! Have you ever heard the name Pepperoni Face? Pizza Face? Crater face? Commander Spot? Looking at people shake their heads because they know you’re too old to have a pimple?

So what happened?!?!?

What changed in my daily routine that could have possibly caused the breakouts?

This!

Here’s the first day of working out:

Here’s the very next day (do you see the pimples forming on the left side):

What exactly happened:

  1. We have an incentive for an all-inclusive cruise to Bermuda, leaving out on April 28, 2018.
  2. We decided to get a puppy.
  3. We purchased an exercise bike for the house.
  4. Lazy mindset.

Now add it all up and it spells disaster. I’m trying to get Bermuda-ready so I promised to exercise each day. The puppy is too young for strenuous activity so I exercise him separately and then I work out.

My days looked a little like this:

  1. Walk/jog/sprint with puppy for 20-25 minutes
  2. Hop on exercise bike
  3. Take puppy out for potty break

Or:

  1. Walk/jog/sprint with puppy for 20-25 minutes
  2. Head to the gym
  3. Stop at PetCo or grocery store since they’re all in the same vicinity

Throw an occasional monkey wrench in there so I’d never get right back to cleanse my face.

End result: it would be at least one hour after sweating before I’d wash my face.

Gross!

Ew!

I know!

I figured as long as I washed my face it would be ok, right? Wrong!

Most acne forms by dead skin cells, bacteria and oil clogging your pores. People who exercise frequently generally produce more dead skin cells than those who do not. Be sure to exfoliate at least twice per week if you exercise frequently to remove the excess dead skin cells.

When you exercise, your pores are expanding or opening which is actually a good thing. It helps the blood and oxygen circulate throughout your skin. Your sweat helps regulate your body temperature and keeps it cooler; exercising helps cleanse the body from the inside and has been said to prevent some signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging skin. In other words, don’t stop exercising! It’s very beneficial.

Your body is pushing the dead skin cells and toxins out to help keep you beautiful. If you leave them on the surface, they’ll find a way back in — getting caught in your pores; thus, creating acne.

The best way to prevent it is by cleansing your face before and after exercising.

Cleansing before you exercise will help remove any leftover makeup, oils and bacteria from the previous day or accumulated since the last time you cleansed your face. Remember, your pores will open when exercising. You don’t want to let in old dirt 🙂

And of course, you want to cleanse after to get those new impurities off your skin and out of your system.

I’m not a fan of taking a shower at the gym. To each, her own. It’s just not my thing.

What can you do if you don’t like to use the shower or in a hurry?

First things first, take a towel to pat the excess sweat off. It may help some to clear your pores but you still want to cleanse your face.

This is all about personal preference but I suggest putting one of these three items in your gym bag or purse:

  1. Gentle Cleanser – take your daily cleanser with you. Try the Anew Clean Illuminating Rich Cleansing Foam which is oil-free and suitable for Normal/Combination skin. It’s gentle enough to be used twice daily and won’t strip your natural oils. The goal is to get rid of excess oil not ALL oil as the oil helps the skin maintain it’s youthful, radiant look.
  2. Facial Cleansing Wipes – some gyms have low water pressure and it seems almost impossible to wash away all of your cleanser or sometimes, you’re just really in a rush to leave. With wipes, you can literally wipe your face off while you’re heading to the car! Try the Makeup Remover Wipes with Mineral Complex. They’re gentle enough to be used around your eye area.
  3. Micellar Cleansing Water – usually does not require water. Simply pour some on a towel, wipe your face and go. Micelles are attracted to dirt and oil so it helps draw them out and clean your face. They’re suspended in soft water so it will also help maintain your skin’s moisture. Try Anew Clean Micellar Cleansing Water, not only does it cleanse but also tones.

What did I use to get rid of the four pimples in less than 4 days?

I believe any of the solutions above could help prevent acne; however, I personally prefer the micellar cleansing water. It’s suitable for all skin types and not only does it cleanse but it also tones which is great for people with oily skin. It eliminates the step of having to use a separate toner and I feel I could literally just apply my moisturizer after using it.

I like that I can control how much comes out. As I said before, we have a puppy. He loves licking our faces. I’ve seen the things that go into his mouth and quite frankly, I don’t want them on my face. After he’s done trying to lick the skin off my face, I just throw a little micellar water on a napkin and wipe the area. They say it’s gentle enough to be used twice daily but so far, I’ve been using it anywhere from 3-5 times and haven’t had any issues. I have very sensitive skin so it’s a definite plus for me!

Anew Clean Micellar Cleansing Water

Literally, here’s a picture of me in the car with micellar water. As soon as I finished working out, I cleansed my face in the car and drove to the other side of the lot to go to the grocery store.

Do you have breakouts after exercising?

Every Oily Girl Needs This👀

Every Oily Girl Needs This👀

I finally found the missing piece to my skincare regimen! Normally, I’d get oily after 2 hours! Earlier this year I found a mattifying moisturizer that helped balance my pH levels and the oil would stay at bay for about 6-7 hours. I heard about toners but never really used them so I decided to give it a shot. About two weeks ago, I purchased the Anew Clean Revitalizing Toner and it is a godsend! I can literally last a whole day and more without looking like I’ve been eating pizza all day!

This should definitely be a staple product for anyone who noticeable pores, oily skin, wears a lot of makeup or looking to refresh their skin!

Avon. Need It. Try It. Love It.: Anew Vitale Day Lotion SPF 25

anewvitale

For those of you following along, you know that I personally use Avon Anew Vitale line. I’ve been using Vitale since I first joined Avon so for about 9-10 months. I love the results that I have had with this line. If you’re interested in reading my official reviews, scroll down to the bottom. I originally used the Avon Anew Vitale Gel Cleanser but since that has been discontinued, I use the Anew Clean cleansers BUT I still use the Vitale regimen. I own both the Anew Vitale Day Lotion and the Anew Vitale Day Cream.

Tip: Anew Vitale Day Lotion is slightly thinner so perfect for those with oily skin. I personally suggest the cream if you have dryer skin or prefer heavier solution. They are both somewhat thin so not like a pudding (i.e. Noxzema) but the consistency of the lotion is a very lightweight lotion.

Typical age group: 20s-30s (base this on your skincare concerns)

Avon Anew Clean New Product Review

Avon Anew Clean New Product Review

Not  too long along, I posted my review for the Avon Anew Vitale Gel Cleanser. Like many, I am resistant to change so when I found out that Avon would be discontinuing their current Anew cleansers (Vitale, Reversalist, Platinum and Ultimate) and Avon Elements cleansers, I was devastated. I thought not only about my customers that loved them, but also, myself! Selfish? I know but when you have sensitive skin and you find something that works for you, it’s hard to give it up. Just like any hoarder, I planned to stock up on my favorite cleanser. In the middle of the night, I realized, I needed to let go of my stubbornness. So I took advantage of the opportunity to try all of the products before they were officially released in Campaign 15.

My biggest concern was the cleanser so I reluctantly opened the Anew Clean Purifying Gel Cleanser. I smelled it at first. To my surprise, it was nothing like I expected! I thought that it would have a floral/rosy scent like the Vitale but it didn’t! That instantly dropped my guard but then I thought about the first time I tried Vitale and had slight irritation. I feared breaking out but at this point, it was too late to turn back. I had already bought the bundle. Unlike the Vitale, it’s not clear but it’s white. I noticed that it lathered better than the Vitale. It wasn’t sudsy but I could tell that every inch of my skin was covered. In my opinion, it actually cleaned better than the Vitale but now it was down to the final determining factor — how would be skin react? I waited. I waited. And I waited some more. Nothing! No irritation! No burning sensation! No wiggling nose! Absolutely nothing! That’s it, just a clean face! I am officially sold!

Of course, I felt very daring at this point so I figured — “try the toner.” Disclaimer: I’ve never tried toner before. I sniffed. Sniffed hard. Sniffed some more. I thought it would smell like alcohol for reason but it didn’t. It didn’t smell like anything. Almost like water. I put a few drops on a pad and rubbed all over my face and neck. It felt slightly refreshing but that’s just about it. I think I’d have to try more before determining if this is a hit or miss.

The day after, I decided to try the Anew Clean Facial Cleansing Wipes before bed. I didn’t have anything on but facial moisturizer. It felt very moisturizing, refreshing at the same time, and slightly cooler than my favorite, Makeup Remover Wipes with Mineral Complex. Still at that point, nothing to write home to mom about. I had to really put them to test to determine if they can take the place of my makeup remover wipes. Avon states they can get rid of stubborn makeup but I don’t think they’ll be replacing the existing wipes avaiable. I just don’t feel the need to have two separate types of wipes. I decided to do a full-face makeup (primer, foundation, eye shadow, thick eyeliner, mascara, the whole grocery store!) To my surprise, I was able to get it all off with one wipe. Granted, my eyes were still a little dark from the heavy liner and mascara but the second wipe got it right off. In my opinion, it did a slightly better job than the makeup remover wipes because it was more moist. The makeup remover wipes, though great, dry out quicker. Neither wipes irritate my skin whatsoever so big plus there. I’m not completely sold on the Anew Clean wipes but it’s only because I already have wipes that work fine and are less expensive.

I tried the Micellar Cleaning Water today and just like the rest of the line, it had a refreshing feeling. I’m going to try it later on tonight when I take my makeup off and update this review.

On to what the customers say:

My customer loves the Reversalist Foam Cleanser so I decided to let her try the Anew Clean Illuminating Rich Cleansing Foam. She was head over heels in love with the Reversalist; however, from her experience, she feels the Anew Clean makes her skin tighter. She is officially sold.

I have another customer that loves the Avon Elements Refining Scrub and Mask so I let her try the Anew Clean Refining Daily Scrub. She’ll give me an update on Monday to tell me how she likes it but I’m sure she’ll love it. If you’ve ever loved any of the Anew or Elements cleansers, you are going to love the Anew Clean line. It’s suitable for every skin type and if you aren’t keen to fragrances, it’s especially for you!

Bottom Line: I believe that the Anew Clean cleansers are a definite homerun. I will continue to try the other products in the line but at this time, I urge to you try them for yourself if you’re interested. They’re currently on sale with special introductory prices so get them before the prices go on!

BB Cream vs CC Cream: Which is Best for You?

BB Cream vs CC Cream: Which is Best for You?

BBvsCCSummer time is quickly approaching and many people are switching from the heavy foundations to a more lightweight coverage. At first, we only had tinted moisturizers; but now with BB and CC creams, the selection gets ever more confusing! So how do you know what’s best for you?

Not only are they good for your skin but they make getting ready a breeze as it combines serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, foundation, concealer and powder.
