Why I No Longer Wear Foundation: The Perfect No-Makeup Makeup Routine

I took foundation out of my foundation routine and my skin has never looked better! Check out what I’m using now 🙂

Have you ever been online and saw someone’s skin and thought it just looks flawless? Like naturally flawless? Like doesn’t look like they’re wearing any makeup or foundation and makes you question if they’ve ever been hit with puberty? Well, that was my goal! Sometimes, the “made up look” just isn’t needed or wanted for your everyday run to the grocery store. Luckily, I finally found something to give me that perfect skin look!

Seriously, I can’t believe it myself! I am a full-face, make-up beat-to-the-Gawds type of girl but for the past five months, I’ve ditched foundation.

Previous Foundation Routine

For those of you who don’t know, here were my makeup steps:

  1. Face Primer
  2. Eyebrows
  3. Concealer to Shape Eyebrows
  4. Eye Primer
  5. Eyeshadow
  6. Eyeliner
  7. Mascara
  8. False Lashes

Now on to the Foundation Routine

  1. Liquid Foundation – usually mixing two shades especially during season changes
  2. Concealer to Highlight Under Eyes, Forehead and Chin
  3. Contour Cheeks and Nose (no forehead contour – I like my big forehead how it is)
  4. Translucent Powder to Set Face
  5. Tinted Loose Powder to Set Highlighted Areas (avoids giving the ghostlike look in pics)
  6. Blush
  7. Strobe Cheekbones, Tip of Nose and Cupid’s Bow
  8. Setting Spray

In that order!

Now some may say that is too much but trust me, baby, my face would be flawless! Look at the pictures if you don’t believe me.

But in recent years, I’ve spent a good chunk of my time focusing on my skin health. This means finding the appropriate products for my skin: skin type, skin concerns, sensitivities and skin care goals. Proud to say I have my regimen down to the T!

I’m at the point where now I can enjoy the fruits of my labor! Old acne scars have cleared up and even the gray patches that formed as a result of an allergic reaction have faded to the point that they’re almost non-existent.

Not to toot my own horn but my face is looking pretty good! And now, it even has a natural “glow.”

My last skin care quest, or should I say trophy, was the Vitamin C Warming Peel Exfoliant and when I tell you, my skin has never felt so soft! It’s like a newborn baby lives on my face!

But back to the topic, I’m finally at a point now where I feel “comfortable” in my own skin. So I’ve streamlined my makeup process and I thought I would share it with you.

I have never received so many compliments on my skin in my life! Even random strangers tell me how beautiful and healthy my skin looks!

Do You Really Need to Wear Foundation?

Truth is: most of us don’t NEED full-coverage foundation. I know, I know. Most makeup gurus and YouTube stars all sport the full-coverage foundation so it seems like a must, right?

Full coverage foundation is best if either you are going to be on-the-screen (i.e. theater, movie, camera, etc) or if you have problematic areas that are very noticeable. Because it’s full coverage, it completely gives you an even coverage — washing out your normal coloring. For those of you wondering, this is why we contour and use blush. It gives the face some “dimension” and character so we’re not flat drawings on a sheet of paper. Used sparingly, they make us look more natural. Of course, you can add more contour to sculpt the face or other body parts but that’s a topic for a different day.

Most of us can do with either a medium coverage, light coverage or even sheer coverage foundation or base.

Common Issues When Using Foundations

  1. Applying too much gives a cakey look or flakes
  2. Oxidizing
  3. Hard to match perfectly
  4. Finish can sometimes look unnatural in different settings
  5. Can possibly clog pores which is horrible for acne-prone skin

New Foundation Routine

On Wednesday, I attended a meeting with the American Cancer Society and literally at least six ladies stopped to tell me how “flawless” my face was which reminded me of when I was in Puerto Rico (less than two weeks ago). A lady said my skin was just glowing and she wanted to touch it. So I decided to step outside to get a good picture. And yes, I zoomed in just to show you.

Up-close:

Foundation Routine: Magix Tint Brightening Tinted Moisturizer

Normal distance:

Magix Tint Brightening Tinted Moisturizer
Wearing Magix Tint Brightening Tinted Moisturizer

This is NOT a foundation. I repeat this is NOT a foundation. This is tinted moisturizer.

So here is my current everyday makeup routine:

  1. Face Primer
  2. Brows (concealer now optional)
  3. Mascara (I’m still learning how to apply. I used to be messy because I knew the falsies would cover it up)
  4. Tinted Moisturizer — applied with beauty sponge (I have a thing against applying makeup with hands)
  5. Translucent Powder to Set
  6. Strobe (optional)
  7. Lipstick/Lip Gloss
  8. Setting Spray

That is it! Yes, my makeup and foundation routine has been cut in half.

Which Product Replaced My Foundation Routine

I’m wearing the Magix Tint Brightening Tinted Moisturizer in the shade Medium. This is a new-to-market product, only being released this summer! I love trying new things 🙂

What I Like Best About the Tinted Moisturizer

  1. It’s affordable — you can get it for $9.99 plus save an additional 10% off when you shop online
  2. It does as it promises: blurs imperfections, tints and hydrates skin
  3. It’s lightweight and breathable — doesn’t feel heavy
  4. It’s illuminating so gives your skin a dewy, glow aka young, youthful, healthy appearance
  5. The shade range is perfect for all complexions. I love that I’m “Medium” meaning there is something for my darker beauties
  6. It’s easier to blend so you don’t have to worry about getting the “perfect” match — perfect for beginners
  7. A little goes a long way
  8. Healthy for the skin — contains passion fruit, chia and sunflower seeds plus Vitamins E and B5
  9. Lasts all day — it was over 95 degrees in Puerto Rico and it didn’t budge plus I’ve done my fair share of partying and it lasts all through the night
  10. With my oily/combo skin, I was concerned about adding another “moisturizer” on top of my moisturizer but surprised to see I didn’t look like an oily mess
  11. Perfect for everyday wear — because it easily blends and matches your skin, you don’t have to worry about mixing foundations (thus saving product and money)
  12. It’s water-based so perfect for oily skin and you don’t have to worry about it clogging pores.
  13. Though it’s a moisturizer, you can build the coverage. I have a birthmark on the left side of my face and it isn’t noticeable in either of the pictures above.

Tips for using:

  1. Still apply your regular moisturizer BEFORE the tinted moisturizer and allow all skin care products to soak in before applying the tinted moisturizer. Applying regular moisturizer will give your skin the extra barrier and protection while also helping the product glide easier on to the skin.
  2. Because it is lightweight and water-based, some people may feel it is “runny.” For better control, apply a few dots directly to your face. Then blend with beauty sponge, brush or your fingers.
  3. Start with light coverage all over and apply a second layer on areas where you’d like a little more coverage.
  4. For oily or more mature skin, set using a loose or pressed powder. I’d suggest a translucent powder so it doesn’t alter the shade/tint. If you know that dewy or illuminating finishes don’t flatter you, this may not be the product for you.

Where It Could Possibly Use a Little Improvement

Unfortunately, the formula does not contain SPF or sun protection; however, I have mixed feelings about this. In the beauty industry, we’ve come to expect it in almost all of our products. Normally, especially for those of us on the darker side, SPF in foundations usually causes that awful “flashback” look in pictures so we look like we’re related to Casper.

Now because I already use a sunscreen with SPF 50 rating, it really doesn’t matter to me anyway. Though I feel this is an area of improvement, it’s not a deal breaker for me.

Do I Recommend the Magix Tint Tinted moisturizer?

Of course I do! Four years ago, I discovered the Magix Face Perfector and absolutely fell in love with it! I still use it today! It’s non-negotiable! So when I heard that the Tinted Moisturizer was coming out, I had to jump on it. It’s like the Magix Face Perfector mixed with a moisturizer. No brainer to me!

I’d recommend it to the busy lady on-the-go, the lady who wants to simplify her foundation routine, the lady who’s tired of being foundation matched and still not getting the perfect shade, the lady who’s just getting started with makeup and wants to keep it simple or the lady who takes great pride in her skin and doesn’t want to mask it.

How I Cleanse My Face Even While in Bed

Have you heard? I have a beauty group now dedicated to giving daily tips, beauty hacks, skin care tips and inspiration! Want to be part of The Beautiful Tribe? Click here to join the Facebook group to connect with other beauty lovers, get helpful advice and share your passion!

If you’re sleeping in your makeup, it’s just like you’re sleeping in the streets. Makeup and even sunscreen can be a magnet to pollution. Think about everything you encounter on a daily basis: car exhaust, smoke, dust, etc. Then, add to the fact, it’s stuck on your face. Once you go to bed, it’s now on your pillow case and mixed with your shedded dead skin cells. It’s like they’re having a little dirty party on your face while you’re asleep unless you use a makeup remover wipe, facial cleanser, cleansing oil or micellar cleansing water. Due to my skin, I opted for makeup remover wipes for sensitive skin. I breakout easily and love makeup.

Yes, we’ve all done it before and maybe haven’t experienced many issues; BUT, over time, we’re doing more damage than good. Now that I know, I sleep with two things on my nightstand. Yes, I’ve had those long nights before but I vowed to never sleep in makeup again. The two things that I always have in arm’s reach: micellar cleansing water and moisturizer or makeup remover wipes and moisturizer.

Literally, most days when I’m feeling exhausted, drained or simply partied too much, I’m cleansing my face while undressing. Sometimes, I flop in the bed and then remove my makeup but I guarantee my makeup is removed before zzzzs. Then I apply my moisturizer. Removing dead skin, bacteria and dirt help to give you a nice natural glow.

Of course, I never had a strict regimen. Occasionally, I’d pick up some wipes or some makeup removing product from the drugstore. Usually this would happen if it was near checkout or during one of my beauty binges. I never formed a habit because I felt like I was just spending money to spend money. Nothing really worked or if it did, it didn’t last.

Some things just dried out too fast. I figured I’d save my money and just wash my face at night. Well, we all know how that goes. Zzzzs…

Until I found these makeup remover wipes.

Best Makeup Remover Wipes for Sensitive Skin

I decided that it really wasn’t worth it any more. I’d always have a pimple or two within two days of sleeping in my makeup. By now, we should all know sleeping in makeup is bad for your skin. Even if you don’t have an immediate break out, it risks bacteria being trapped in your pores. It prevents your skin from “breathing” overnight and it can also cause your skin to age prematurely which leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Oh, there’s also the bacteria that either irritates your skin or possibly even causes an eye infection. Of course, these are just the possibilities.

Some people are able to get away with it (at least for now) but why risk it? Especially when you have tools now that let’s you cleanse your face while you’re still in bed. This is why I had to try out what I’m calling the best makeup remover wipes for sensitive skin.

Check out my review here:

Yes, I’m actually going to show you how it removes my makeup.

My initial expectations:

Honestly, I used several makeup remover wipes before including the most popular ones. My issues were some wipes dried out almost as soon as I opened them. Or some wipes literally burned once I went over my eye area. There was one time I blinked so hard, I thought my eyes would burn out of my skull!

My experience with these wipes:

When receiving these, I didn’t think they’d burn but I did believe they’d dry out fast. As you see in the video, one pack lasted over six weeks and they never dried out! In my opinion, that was the best part. I’ve gone through way too many wipes that dried out. I used to actually wet them with water. Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?

The moisture in the wipe made it so easy to wipe off my entire face. I was wearing everything except eyeshadow. Since then, of course, I’ve used it to remove eyeshadow. I’m so surprised that even after wiping off my entire face, it’s still moist! And get this, I only have to use one wipe!

With that being said, I recommend having these on hand even if you aren’t wearing makeup. I recently broke out because I was working out and not cleansing my face immediately afterwards. I got into the habit of carrying micellar water but wipes may be more convenient for others, especially if you’re traveling. It’s a definite must-have.

Have you ever seen someone’s makeup online and thought “that is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I have to have that!!!” You go out and spend hundreds of dollars on different eyeshadow palettes because you want to express yourself!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being bold and fearless! As such, sometimes, we want our makeup to reflect that! Nothing is worse than having our hopes up for being bold and standing out than getting that new eyeshadow palette and realizing it was a flop!

Now you’re wondering “how do they get it to look like that”, “are they using different products”, “are they using filters”, forget it, it’s fake — let’s just throw the whole thing away.

Wait! Before you throw it away and vow to never try eyeshadow again, let’s see what we can do to fix it.

There are a number of reasons why eyeshadow colors aren’t as vibrant as we’d like. Common reasons: poor pigmentation or product development, technique, skin complexion and skin type.

One way to get the eyeshadow to pop, or even show up for that matter, is to neutralize the eyelid. Here are a few techniques that I use and would love for you to try to make your eyeshadow pop*!

* Note: in the picture below, it is about 8 p.m. so it’s dark outside, I’m sitting in the car and my eyeshadow is still showing using one of the techniques below!

7 Tips to Make Eyeshadow Pop

Think of art. Most artists begin with a blank canvas. Our eyelids are existing pieces of art. Sometimes they carry oil which causes eyeshadow to fade or crease and other times, our veins or other discolorations show through. Before you apply ANY eyeshadow, be sure to try one of the techniques below.

Remember, most masterpieces with a blank canvas 🙂

1. Use a base

Neutralize the eyelid with a white or black base. White or black are most commonly sold so easier to find but are also opposite of your skin complexion so will really stand out. I’m a half cut-crease type of girl so my personal favorite is NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk (white) or Black Bean (black). It is a pencil that can be used as an eyeliner or eyeshadow, according to the company. In this case, we’ll use it as a base 🙂 It gives the eye a very dramatic uplift.

Once your eyes are prepped, primed and brows drawn, apply the pencil from the base of the eyelid (near eyelashes) to your crease. Then softly blend out from the crease to an upward motion (towards your eyebrows). This will help diffuse the stark base and give you a little more dimension or help with getting a great half- or full cut-crease.

VeryColorful

2. Use concealer

When most people think of concealer, they think of hiding flaws or highlighting; however, you can also use concealer to neutralize the eyelid. Some people use foundation to serve as a base but concealer has a thicker consistency, offers more coverage and easier to control.

Apply concealer, blend it out and add a thin coat of translucent powder to set it and help absorb oil (if you have only skin).

3. Use eyeshadow primer

Like concealer, eyeshadow primer is usually thicker in consistency so product sticks to it pretty easily. Not only does primer help the eyeshadow stay on but it also absorbs oil and helps to prevent creasing — great if you have oily eyelids!

TECHNIQUE – After the eyelids are prepped and primed using one of the methods above.

4. Rose Water

If you’ve never heard of Rose Water, you are in for a real treat! You can either buy it locally or make your own. It is wonderful for hydration and can even be used to prep or moisturize the skin before applying makeup. Rose water has more benefits than water when it comes to the skin.

If you make the rose water, put in a bottle so you can spritz your eyeshadow brush. The brush does NOT need to be dripping wet. You want it to feel slightly damp. Dip the brush in the eyeshadow. The moisture should help the brush pick up more pigment.

5. Setting Spray

Just like Rose Water, Setting Spray can be used. Setting spray has properties that help makeup lasts all day but also has ingredients that have more like an “adhesive” property so the pigments stick and stay put. Lightly spritz the brush with setting spray, dip in the eyeshadow or pigment and apply to the lid.

6. Right type of brush

There are many types of makeup brushes. Each brush is not created equal. Instead of using a fluffy blending brush which disperses the color, try a flat shader brush to really collect the eyeshadow and pack it onto the lid.

7. Application

Application makes the world of a difference! Many beginners apply eyeshadow in a windshield wiper motion — sweeping it across the eye lid from left to right. This is great for blending; however, the technique lessens the intensity of the eyeshadow pigment. Instead, use the flat shader brush and pat or press the eyeshadow on to the desired spot.

What’s my favorite type of method? My personal fave is concealer! The first thing I do when applying makeup is fill in my eyebrows. Once my brows are filled in, I clean them up and make them look sharper with concealer. I take the concealer down from the brow to the base of my lid, blend it out and apply a little translucent powder.

Depending on my desired look, I may combine a few of the techniques such as concealer with a white base or if an eyeshadow is really spotty, I’ll also spritz my brush and continue to build up the color! I usually do this for a more dramatic, half-cut crease.

How to Stop Foundation from Transferring

I won’t lie, I haven’t been feeling very eyeshadow-y lately. I know that’s not a word but I think you get the point. For the past few weeks, I’ve been really rocking the whole “no makeup” makeup look. Honestly, for most days, it’s all you really need: perfect your skin, fill those eyebrows in and pucker up baby!

Looking online, it seems many women struggle with leaving foundation on their clothing or even worse, someone else’s clothing! Like who wants to hug someone and walk off with a nice friendly reminder on their white shirt —eeewww!!! It’s embarrassing.

It seems this issue is really prevalent with darker complexions and us oily girls — the foundation just runs right off our faces!

So how do you stop it? How to get your foundation to lasts all day? Well, I’m glad you asked! Since I’ve changed my foundation routine, these four steps have saved my life! Well maybe not that dramatic but it’s made a major difference. I literally get over 11 hours of wear! I haven’t tested beyond that point but isn’t that like a standard day?

How to stop foundation from transferring:

Step 1: Primer – primer helps to fill in your pores, reduce shine, give an even canvass and creates a barrier between the skin and the foundation. I usually apply with my fingers just like I would a moisturizer.

Step 2: Foundation – the common go-to is liquid foundation. If you are usually oily, try an oil-free foundation instead. Oil-based foundations will only make the matter worse. Try applying with a foundation brush or beauty sponge for a truly flawless look.

Step 3: Loose Powder – loose powder helps absorb any excess oil so the foundation doesn’t run. I personally recommend opting for translucent powder as opposed to pigmented. If you are very oily, you still may experience some shine and need to “powder your nose.” Translucent powder easily tackles the shine and prevents the makeup from looking cakey if you apply too much. If you rub off the foundation, then opt for the pigmented powder but only apply in those needed areas. You do not need to go over the entire face again.

Step 4. Setting Spray – setting spray helps to keep everything in place. Think of it just like hair spray or better yet, let’s think of it like a sandwich. The primer is your first piece of bread, the foundation is the meat, the powder is the cheese and the setting spray is the second piece of bread. Of course, blush, highlighter, concealer and the other bells and whistles are like mayo, mustard, etc —condiments but let’s stick to the basics.

Tip: if you need to freshen up during the day, be sure to have a mattifying pressed powder so it’s not as messy as the loose powder. BEFORE applying the powder, take a napkin or tissue paper or blotting papers to carefully blot the excess oil. THEN apply the powder. If you apply the powder over the oil, you can create a paste and the foundation will look thicker.

Need help picking out products? Check out my personal recommendations.

If you find that you’re excessively oily, which is contributing to the foundation issue, make sure you are following a proper skin care regimen geared towards oily skin. Make sure that you are exfoliating at least 1-2 times per week and using an appropriate moisturizer. Yes, oily skin needs moisturizers as well. Not using a moisturizer actually causes your skin to produce more oil.

Have you tried Avon’s Anew Skincare Line? Or are you afraid of making the financial commitment? Don’t worry. There’s a perfect solution for you. Back in December, I purchased the travel size of Avon Anew Vitale to assist with the dullness and lack of radiance that seems to creep up more times than not. At times, I look like the undead! I don’t have very noticeable pores but sometimes they show as well.

I like to call it a trial size as opposed to travel size as it’s enough product for anyone to try and experience results. Samples allow you to feel and smell the product but usually results aren’t instant unless using Anew Clinical. The trial size allows users the experience of testing the results. For me, the trial size lasted about two months even though Avon promises two weeks.

The trial sizes cost $12.99 for the cleanser, day cream and night cream. It was the best investment I made to begin my skincare regiment. View the comparison below to see which is right for you or click here to get Avon Anew now.

Avon MagiX Face Perfector Before (Left) and After (Right)
I can’t believe I haven’t done a review on Avon’s Magix Face Perfector! OMG! This is seriously one of my staple products. I’ve included a before and after just so you can see why. In the before picture, I have absolutely nothing on my face (not even moisturizer). I simply washed my face and was ready to face the world.

Avon Product Description:

“Upgraded formula! Is it makeup? No, it’s MagiX! Avon’s exclusive HD Finish Complex provides the “magic” in this colorless skin-perfector.

A revolutionary colorless gel-to-powder formula provides invisible coverage for a naturally flawless finish and keeps skin looking naturally matte for 7 full hours. The “magic” behind magiX is Avon’s patent-pending High Definition Finish Complex, an exclusive complex that works to counteract shine and visibly smooth the look of fine lines and pores! The Face Perfector can be used as a primer, but also can be used on its own to blur away and imperfections. The colorless primer is perfect for all day wear and fights the look of oily shine, it also has SPF 20 to help keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Why did I choose this product?

I wasn’t looking for a flawless finish. Honestly, I just wanted something that could blur some of the discoloration and make me look more well-groomed without so much makeup. I was in Jamaica and I knew that I would engage in water activities. I didn’t want to look like my face was melting when I got out of the pool due to makeup but I also knew that I didn’t want to look like the undead in photos. I also wanted a sunscreen as I knew we’d spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun. My goal was to create a quick and easy makeup non-makeup look.

Before Picture: As you can see, I have slight discoloration in the middle of my cheek. I’m not sure if it’s acne scars, hormones, bad eating habits or what but it forms almost a square or makeup even a star (depending on who’s interpretation).

After Picture: I applied the MagiX Face Perfector and mark. Touch & Glow Shimmer Cubes All Over Face Palette. No foundation and no concealer at all!

Makeup Routine:

  1. Washed face with Anew Vitale Gel Cleanser (now discontinued)…Find out what I use now
  2. Applied MagiX Face Perfector
  3. Applied mark. Touch & Glow Shimmer Cubes All Over Face Palette
  4. Completed eyebrows with Glimmersticks Brow Definer and Perfect Eyebrow Kit
  5. Applied Big & Multiplied Mascara

Viola! That was it! Quick and simple easy makeup look.

What’s my skin type?

I used to have dry skin but as I’ve gotten older, I have combination skin. The T-zone is usually oil and dry around the cheeks.

Do I have sensitive skin?

My skin is very sensitive. I easily breakout and it seems like I’m allergic to life! I have more discoloration on my cheek from cellphone use.

How does it feel?

It’s a gel to powder so it’s very light and airy. It’s non-greasy and absorbs easily into the skin. It doesn’t feel heavy once applied and leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth.

How much does it costs?

Normally, it retails for $14.00 but currently on sale for $9.99.

How long have I used this product?

For about four months but only underneath my foundation. This was the first time using the product alone.

Would you recommend this product?

Most definitely!
